One of the great surprises of Las Vegas is how quickly it ends. Drive twenty minutes west of the Strip and the casinos give way to Red Rock Canyon — towering red sandstone, desert bighorn sheep, and a silence that’s hard to find in this town.
The basics
Red Rock is a National Conservation Area with a 13-mile Scenic Drive loop. During busy months you’ll need a timed-entry reservation for the loop, so book ahead. There’s a small per-vehicle fee at the gate.
What to do
- Drive the loop. Even without hiking, the overlooks are spectacular.
- Easy walks: the Calico Hills and the Visitor Center loop are short and stunning.
- Bigger hikes: Ice Box Canyon and Calico Tanks reward a couple of hours of effort.
- Golden hour lights the rock on fire — late afternoon is magic.
Desert smarts
Bring more water than you think you need, wear real shoes, and check the forecast — summer midday heat is no joke, and flash floods can close canyons after rain. Go early or late, skip the hottest hours, and you’ll have one of the most memorable mornings of your trip. Then you’re back on the Strip in time for dinner.
