Here’s the secret the Strip doesn’t advertise: Las Vegas can be one of the most affordable trips in the country, or one of the most expensive, and the difference is mostly planning.
Where the money actually goes
It’s rarely the flight or even the room. It’s the little stuff — resort fees, $22 cocktails, rideshare surges, and “why not” impulse buys — that quietly doubles a trip’s cost.
Our budget playbook
- Go midweek. Sunday-through-Thursday room rates can be a third of weekend prices.
- Read the resort fee before you book. It’s not optional and it’s not always small.
- Eat one big meal, not three. A great lunch is cheaper than the same restaurant at dinner.
- Drink before the show, not at it. Venue prices are the real gamble.
- Stay downtown or just off-Strip. You lose a little walking convenience and save a lot.
- Free entertainment is everywhere. We wrote a whole post on it.
The mindset
You don’t have to do everything. Pick two or three things you genuinely care about, spend on those, and let the free, walkable, people-watching side of Vegas fill in the rest. Some of the best nights here cost almost nothing.
