A First-Timer's Guide to the Las Vegas Strip

The Las Vegas Strip is only about four miles long, which sounds walkable until you’re standing in 105-degree heat wondering why the hotel you can clearly see is still twenty minutes away. Distances lie here — the resorts are enormous, so “next door” is often a half-mile through a casino, a mall, and a parking structure.

Getting your bearings

Think of the Strip in three chunks. The south end (Mandalay Bay to Park MGM) is a little calmer and great for a first night. The center (Bellagio, Caesars, the Venetian) is the postcard Vegas — fountains, canals, the big names. The north end (Resorts World, the Strat) is where the Strip starts to fade into downtown.

Getting around

  • Walk the center Strip — the people-watching is the whole point.
  • The Deuce bus runs 24/7 up and down the Strip and is cheap.
  • Rideshare is easy but surge pricing after big shows is brutal.
  • Monorail is handy on the east side if your hotels line up with it.

Your first 24 hours

Check in, drop your bags, and resist the urge to do everything at once. Grab a coffee, walk the center Strip at golden hour, catch the Bellagio fountains after dark, and eat somewhere with a view. Save the big-ticket stuff for when you’re rested. Vegas rewards pacing more than sprinting.

Most of all: drink water. The desert is undefeated, and the number one thing that ruins a first trip is dehydration, not luck.
