Summerlin and the West Side: Local Vegas

If you want to understand how Las Vegas residents really live, point yourself west. Summerlin, the master-planned community pressed up against the mountains, is about as far from the Strip in spirit as you can get while still being in town.

A Different Kind of Vegas

Out here you trade neon and crowds for tree-lined streets, parks, and wide-open views of Red Rock Canyon glowing in the afternoon light. Life moves at a calmer pace, and the desert feels close in the best way.

What to Do

  • Hike or bike the trails around Red Rock Canyon
  • Explore Downtown Summerlin’s shops and restaurants
  • Catch a minor league ballgame on a warm evening
  • Grab coffee or brunch where locals actually go

Who It’s For

We recommend the west side to anyone staying a few extra days, traveling with family, or simply craving some breathing room. It is an easy drive from the Strip but feels like a genuine break from it. Mornings are especially good, when the air is cool and Red Rock is at its most photogenic.

You will want a car to get the most out of the area, since everything is spread out in classic suburban fashion. Pair a morning hike with an afternoon of shopping and a relaxed dinner, and you have a full day that most visitors never even consider – which is exactly what makes it feel like a discovery.
